A typical upgrade that can be considered is the inclusion of WiFi / Bluetooth streamer into your vintage amplifier or receiver.
In addition to the usual oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies and waveform generators, the laboratory has QuantAsylum audio test and measurement equipment and a Rohde & Schwartz AM and FM stereo RF signal generator.
This project was for a customer who requested a repair and modern upgrade for his daughter’s 1980s vintage Technics SU-V5 amplifier.
The amplifier was repaired, cleaned inside and out, and electrolytic capacitors replaced. It then had a full service prior to the addition of a high end WiFi / Bluetooth streamer on a bespoke printed circuit board (PCB). The streamer is a high end device made by Arylic. To get the best out of the streamer, the design included an ESS 9023 hifi digital to analogue (DAC) converter.
The completed PCB was suitable in form, fit and function to be mounted in a space over the existing phono pre-amp stage.
On the front panel a pushbutton was fitted with integral LED. This is used for resetting the Arylic streamer and indicating that it is connected to WiFi.
As two tape inputs are unlikely to be required these days, the ‘tape 2’ input was repurposed to listen to the streamer.
The amplifier is in a metal case so needs external aerials. Two are used one for WiFi and one for Bluetooth.
